The Making of Liberty X Chinti and Parker
Anna Singh, Co-founder and director of Chinti and Parker
A recent count totalled 12 deep purple Liberty bags of varying sizes in and around Chinti and Parker co-founder Anna Singh's desk space, such is her affection for shopping at said department store. Before she protests too strongly, we will concede that they've been accrued over a considerable period and that she does like to reuse her luxury packaging, but basically, she's nuts about Liberty. Here, she spills the beans on Chinti's Liberty collaboration and why she loves to shop there.
How did the Liberty X Chinti and Parker collaboration come about?
I’m very flattered to say that Liberty approached us. We now join an elite group of Liberty designer collaborations that include Acne and Nike. Chinti and Parker have been stocked in Liberty for a number of years now, and it’s a great privilege to collaborate in this way – we both value great quality and timeless style, so such a pairing made perfect sense, really.
What was the design process like - was there a particular brief or did things sort of evolve?
The design process was incredibly easy as it had a natural synergy. We both wanted to combine our most iconic elements, which for Liberty was a classic floral print and for us was our signature styles, the elbow patch cardigan and sweater, and striped sailor tee. It was pretty much a match made in heaven as stripes and florals are a classic (and killer) combination, and our knitwear - which is fairly boyish in vibe - balances beautifully with the femininity of a floral print.
Did you get to visit the Liberty archive and leaf through fabric books?
Did we ever! This was probably the most exciting part, and Anna the Liberty archivist (we have a blog interview with her also), had an encyclopedic knowledge of Liberty’s prints. We ended up choosing a beautiful floral called Pereira, which dates back to the early 1900s!
Your love of Liberty is well documented. What are your favourite things about shopping there?
How to choose?! The designer fashion at Liberty is in a league of its own. They have the best mix of high fashion, emerging designer and luxury casualwear around. I also adore their beauty department, and always make a trip to the 3rd floor to ogle the Astier de Villate tableware.
Lastly, how do you plan to wear your Liberty X Chinti and Parker pieces?
With jeans, a tee and one of my many pairs of slip-on Vans. Also, with Chinti’s Chambray denim shirt-dress.
