Bridget Riley's Stripes

Bridget Riley is a pioneer. For the last 50 years the 83-year-old op-artist has been breaking ground with her eye-bending stripes. Riley has dedicated her life to transforming this most humble of compositions.

Its appeal is linked to its simplicity. It is taken from nature – zebras come laced in it, sand ripples into it and it’s ingrained into wood. With dizzying effect Riley contorts and manipulates lines to create pulsating rhythms that rely on the slightest of variations.

Since the swinging sixties Riley’s impact of the art world has rippled through to fashion. Just look to classic Bretons or skinny ribbons to see the impact of this Riley’s work.
