Chic Fix: Tees Please
Off-duty style is not a new thing, but the search for the ideal pieces to make up an effortless cool outfit reaches utmost importance in the summer months, where 'easy' rules. And nothing says ‘off-duty’ like the perfect t-shirt.
The appeal of the look can be summarised in one word (borrowed from the French, whose laidback confidence has always inspired the Chinti DNA): insouciance. Meaning indifference, or ‘a lack of concern’, it conveys being self-assured in your own personal charms – no frills, or bells and whistles needed.
The off-duty look was inspired by models who dash between runway shows in easy basics that go with everything. But style icons such as Jackie-O and Jane Birkin (below) from the sixties have long-known about the relaxed elegance of the tee.
While those who knock the concept are likely to say they have stacks and stacks of old t-shirts, it's worth noting that all tees are not created equal. Premium off-duty basics are essential no matter age or style, as there are always low-key gaps in everyone's schedule (weekend market trolling, brunch, to-and-fro the gym, the school run) that can be wonderfully elevated by a 'Nice T-Shirt'. (Read: well-cut from high-quality cotton with nice detailing and stylish colours.) Here are some of our favourite Chinti and Parker Ts:
A nice tee can even bring a cool contemporary feel to on-duty outfits - try tucking a t-shirt into a skirt and top with a blazer for fashion-expert contrast.
