How To Do Cannes-Casual
One of the most important dates in the film calendar, and not to mention of general fabulousness and red-carpet moments, the 68th Cannes Film Festival is on until this Sunday, 24 May. There are 19 films competing for top prize this year, with a few strong contenders including Todd Haynes’s Carol, a 1950s-set lesbian romance starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, as well as Sicario, a drug-cartel drama starring Emily Blunt and Benicio del Toro. Keep track of winners on the official site here.
But the event also draws attention to one of our favourite sources of inspiration - pared-back nautical Riviera-chic - which can be seen aplenty in all its glory off the red carpet. Perfect examples below are Alessandra Ambrosio and Taylor Swift, or historically, Françoise Hardy and Jane Birkin as they unboarded flights and roved around La Croisette.
Established by the jet set, the original group of socialites, film stars, politicians, musicians and artists who flocked to the Riviera every year, the look is defined by casual day dresses, loose-fitting linen separates, stripes, pastel hues, chambray, gauzy fabrics, textured summer knits, and ankle-grazing cropped trousers. The effect is confident yet low-key.
You don't have to be in the South of France to channel the look - the easy and timeless appeal translates everywhere. Here are our top Med-inspired picks:
